Worship

At Southwest Central, we are not fancy. Rather, our worship is simple, meaningful, open, and intentional. As a gender-inclusive and diverse congregation, we believe in the voices of both women and men leading our services – together proclaiming the love of God and spurring one another on in faith.

While much thought and planning is given to our worship, we allow many to participate and leave room for God’s Spirit to work. Our worship time together typically includes praise through acapella singing, prayer, listening to God’s Word read and proclaimed, intercessory prayer, and sharing in communion.

Sunday Gatherings at Southwest Central

Here are a few things to expect during our gatherings:

A warm welcome…

We value connection. We aim for a home-church type atmosphere – a place where everyone is welcome and everyone belongs.

We all participate…

Even though we have a lead minister, we all share in the sound of our assemblies. In our gathered time together, we have both women and men praying, reading Scripture, serving, preaching, and song leading. In this we demonstrate that in Christ “there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, for we are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:28).

A spoken word…

Led by our minister, Steve Sargent, a dedicated group of individuals dreams, initiates, and implements our gathered worship times with intentionality and hope. By following the church calendar and lectionary texts, the team plans months in advance, listening deeply to the Word and trusting in the guidance of the Spirit. This collaborative approach allows us to draw on the diverse gifts of our congregation; Steve preaches most Sundays, but any one of our insightful members may be invited to preach, bringing a unique style, delivery, and perspective to the day’s Scripture. Our services remain dynamic and responsive to these texts – while some Sundays center on a traditional message, others may lead us toward a morning of shared testimonies, collective prayer, or a time of active service to others.

The Lord’s Table…

All are welcome at the Table of Jesus. Each Sunday, we gather to eat and drink in remembrance of Christ, honoring the Presence that dwells within us and moves among us.

We are a diverse group…

Our church is a diverse family of persons from a wide-range of ethnicities and economic backgrounds. We celebrate the variety of ages and cultures that make us whole, witnessing the goodness of God in each person.

We love to sing…

By choice, we utilize a cappella music with four-part harmony. Our worship music is purposeful and beautiful, whether you are actively singing or simply listening.
